Rijeka i pustinja: Iračka kinematografija kroz rad Amera Alwana
Dragi svi, nakon niza diskurzivnih programa unutar linije Ljudi u pokretu, s veseljem vas pozivamo na prve (od nadamo se mnogih) večeri filmskih projekcija, koje će se održati u MaMi 14., 15., 16. travnja u 19h.
U suradnji sa Živim Ateljeom i pod kuratorskom palicom Nawara Ghanima Murada, kroz tri filmske večeri donosimo posvetu trajnoj snazi iračke kinematografije i poetskoj viziji Amera Alwana (1957.-2023.). Filmske slike, sjećanja i razgovor provest će nas kroz rijeke, pustinje i krhke krajolike izgnanstva i pripadnosti, pružajući nam rijedak uvid u ljepotu, otpornost i ljudskost Iraka, viđene očima njegovih umjetnika.

Zaman, čovjek iz trske (2003.) 1’17”
Dirljiv portret života uz rijeku Tigris za vrijeme iračkog embarga.
Dobitnik brojnih međunarodnih nagrada. Snimljen pod strogom cenzurom i prokrijumčaren iz Iraka.
15. travnja, 19h — Bezdržavljanstvo i identitet
Doba bezdržavljanstva (2018.) 1’30”
Istraživanje izgnanstva, sjećanja i ljudske cijene života bez domovine.
Amer Alwan pojavljuje se u snažnoj glumačkoj ulozi.
16. travnja, 19h — Putovanje Hadž Nedžima
Hadž Nedžim (2015.) 1’30’
Intiman film koji istražuje tradiciju, otpornost i protok vremena.
Rijetko prikazivan, pruža jedinstveni uvid u tematski svijet Amera Alwana.
O Ameru Alwanu:
Amer Alwan (1957.–2023.) bio je iračko-francuski redatelj i glumac čiji rad povezuje Istok i Zapad, sjećanje i izgnanstvo.
Njegovi filmovi, bogati ljudskošću i poetskim slikama, govore o borbama i nadama onih koji žive između kultura.

The River and the Desert: Iraqi Cinema through Amer Alwan
Dear all, after a series of discursive events within the People on the Move program line, we are delighted to invite you to the first (of hopefully many) Film Screening Evenings, which will take place at MaMa on April 14th, 15th, and 16th at 7 PM.
In collaboration with Živi Atelje and under the curatorial direction of Nawar Ghanim Murad, these three evenings will be a tribute to the enduring power of Iraqi cinema and the poetic vision of Amer Alwan (1957–2023). Through film, memories, and conversation, we will journey across rivers, deserts, and the fragile landscapes of exile and belonging, offering a rare glimpse into the beauty, resilience, and humanity of Iraq, seen through the eyes of its artists.

April 14, 7pm — The Director’s Struggle and Triumph
Zaman, the Man from the Reeds (2003) – 1’17”
A moving portrait of life along the Tigris River during the Iraqi embargo.
Winner of multiple international awards. Shot under extreme censorship and smuggled out of Iraq.
April 15 — Statelessness and Identity
Age of Statelessness (2018) – 1’30”
An exploration of exile, memory, and the human cost of being without a homeland.
Featuring Amer Alwan in a powerful acting role.
April 16 — The Journey of Hajj Najem
Haj Nejim the grocer (2015) – 1’30”
An intimate film exploring tradition, resilience, and the passage of time.
Rarely screened, offering a unique glimpse into Alwan’s thematic universe.
About Amer Alwan:
Amer Alwan (1957–2023) was an Iraqi-French filmmaker and actor whose work bridges East and West, memory and exile.
His films, rich in humanity and poetic imagery, tell the stories of struggle and hope for those living between cultures.
- Film languages: Arabic and French, with English subtitles
- Each screening will be introduced by Nawar Ghanim Murad
- An informal discussion will follow for those who wish to share thoughts and reflections.
